Dewey's Readathon: After the 4th Hour

It's 12 midnight where I am, and four hours have passed since the Readathon started. My children and my husband are asleep, while I am here, struggling not to fall in with them. Although I started reading exactly at 8, which is when the Readathon started, I lost an hour and a half in between due to a long personal phone call. Goes to show that, no matter how well you plan things, life gets in the way. Ah well.

So, how am I doing? Here are my stats, so far...

I really enjoyed Pillars of the Earth but I can't imagine reading it during the read-a-thon. Very ambitious!

I'm impressed that you're tackling one (such huge) book for the read-a-thon. I know a lot of people who have read pillars of the earth but for some reason have never been interested in it, so i'm gonna want to read your review and get a better idea of what it's about. Good luck!!

Thank you all to the wonderful cheerleaders! Pillars is really an interesting book, so far, and I'm enjoying it even if I haven't got much reading done.

The El Bimbo Variations by Adam David

When reading a poetry collection, one of the last things you expect to do is laugh out loud. But, if you were to read Adam David's new edition of The El Bimbo Variations , that is exactly what you'd be doing. My advice: try not to read it in public, unless you're okay with people looking at you weird because your shoulders are suddenly shaking in laughter or you have a snap-happy grin on your face. I first read The El Bimbo Variations back when it was still in pdf format. Four years ago, the poet Adam David gave a talk to one of our high school junior classes during a yearly activity where we expose students to real-life writers. In preparation, he sent us  a copy of his El Bimbo Variations , and told me that we could distribute it to the students so that they'd know his work. We photocopied them for the classes assigned to Adam and, on the day of the talk, I went in and listened to his session where he got riled up about big publishers and their limited repertoire...
