Book Tidbits 14: Of graphic novels, men, page 99, Ruin, and 13 words

from GraphicNovelReporter

I have run out of books to review, which is why I'm doing another Book Tidbit post. Not that I've reviewed every single book I've read. But the others I haven't reviewed were read months, if not a year ago, and I'm not inclined to review books read that far back in the past. And I'm still enjoying working my slow way through Shteyngart's Super Sad True Love Story, so more on that when I'm through.

But I did come across interesting stuff last week, such as...

  • comic books or graphic novels to look forward to. Graphic Novel Reporter features the upcoming graphic novels for Fall 2010. What I loved about it is that the list is segregated according to age group. Makes it easier to find something for my little boy and for my big boy. And me, of course.
  • A couple of months ago, I posted something on a study that reflects gender differences when it comes to reading. Well, Book Bench recently asked, too, what we talk about when we talk about men not reading
  • The Page 99 test. Ford Madox Ford says it's a foolproof way to test whether you're going to like a book or not. In fact, a website's been created for it where publishers and writers can upload their page 99s for the perusal and feedback of the reading public. Currently, it's not live yet. but I can tell you, that's one site I'll wait for.
  • A little Shakespeare love (and maybe teaching ideas)--Shakespeare finger puppets! From Masterpuppet theatre, your fingers can now play the great Shakespearean characters.:) (Am I the only one tickled by this?) I don't care. I can imagine all the voices I'm going to make with these at my fingertips!
  • On the local front, Rocket Kapre books is giving away Ruin and Resolve, their charity speculative fiction anthology made in the aftermath of Ondoy (Typhoon Ketsana). Get the coupon from the site, and you can download the ebook free from Smashwords. But they'd appreciate a little donation, too, for the Philippine National Red Cross.
  • Finally, another charming children's book trailer, this one by Lemony Snicket for his new book, 13 Words. He beautifully captures how I feel about cake.:)

I loooove Lemony Snicket. I have all 13 volumes and pretty disinclined to review it - might not do it justice. I'm having my 8 year old start with the Bad Beginning - hopefully it catches her fancy. But it's great that Lemony Snicket is writing again. I'm pretty enamored with Pseudonymous Bosch right now - very Snicket-y as well in its wit and emphasis on talented children - oh and yes, the Mysterious Benedict Society Series. =)
You may already enjoy the original Page 99 Test and Page 69 Test -- they've been up & running for several years now.
