The Joy of Meeting Other Bloggers, which leads to The Joy of Getting More Books

Last Saturday, I was finally able to snatch some time out for myself in order to join the second Filipino Book Bloggers' meet-up. I blogged about the first meet-up here, and this second meet-up was last Nov. 13. Fortuitously, it was held in Libreria at Cubao X. I say fortuitously because Triccie, Libreria's owner, is a book friend and I had been planning to go visit her newly reopened book shop but had never found the excuse to break away from my self-imposed work-home cycle. The meet-up provided me with the excuse.

And so, nearly three hours late (because I did have work that day), I finally made it to Libreria to find everyone comfortably chatting around the bookstore's center table and sipping their freshly-brewed refillable coffee. They were book bloggers. With coffee. In a bookstore. I could've been five hours late and I think they would've still been there, cozily sipping their coffee and talking shop (books and writing).

Actually, once I finally got settled, I realized that they weren't really sitting comfortably all throughout. Periodically, someone would break away from the conversation, stand up, and start browsing through the shelves again or bound over to the cashier to buy one of those yummy cookies and brownies sold in the store.   Surrounded by the wonderful books in homey Libreria, who would blame them? And so I did the same: jumped up once in a while to look at the books and buy food.

Because I was late, I didn't get much opportunity to weigh in on the discussions and because I was so hungry and kept eating, I barely remember what we talked about. But these summaries from the other attendees can sure help you out: Chachic's, Jason's, Blooey's, Michelle's, and Kenneth's.

Naturally, I ended up buying books. But I was trying to exercise restraint, hence I only got two: Zadie Smith's On Beauty and Bernard Schlink's The Reader. And so the night ended many, many hours later after two dinners and two purchased books. Sometime during first dinner, by the way, Tina of One More Page was finally able to join.

Yesterday, too, I had the opportunity to meet-up with another fellow book blogger from the Philippines, my NYRB Reading Week co-host, Mrs. B of The Literary Stew. It was the first time for us to meet each other, despite several email exchanges, and I am happy to report Mrs. B is as lovely and charming as the blog she owns. We met at Fully Booked High Street, talked about book bloggy and non-book bloggy stuff, then got down to the business of selecting the winners for the reading week.

Unfortunately, I am not a photographer (as I suppose you can tell from those photos I just took from Kenneth), so I have no visual proof. I do, however, have proof in the guise of books we swapped. From Mrs. B, I got two new NYRBs, Stefan Zweig's Beware of Piety and Gyula Krudy's Sunflower, as well as Light Boxes by Shane Jones.

However, before she arrived, I'd already scoured the bookstore in order to spend a couple of gift cheques that I'd gotten as a gift. And so, goodbye restraint and happily! I got myself 3 books from my wishlist: Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell, The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins, and The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters.

My collective loot from both meets with other book bloggers.

I have to say, I love meeting up with fellow book bloggers and enabling each other's passion for (or addiction to) books.

Hi Honey, it was lovely meeting you too and again thanks for the books! So nice to meet a fellow blogger and book lover. Also, you've been an excellent co-host so thanks for co-hosting the NYRB Reading Week with me. I'm still surprised by how successful it was and how many people participated. It was a nice experience. NYRB still isn't over for me though...I'm still reading Stoner and enjoying it so far. Which book are you reading now? Can't wait to hear your thoughts on Woman in White.

Hi, Honey! Of course I have to make a comment now that I see that you've purchased a copy of The Woman in White. It's one of my favorite books! Well, it's my third favorite. (My all-time favorite would still be I, Claudius by Robert Graves, followed by Independent People by Halldor Laxness.) I assure you that you won't be able to put TWIW down once you've started it!

I loved The Little Stranger as well!

Hey you're right, even if you were five hours late, we would've still been at it. You'd be just in time for the second dinner probably. I'm glad we decided to get pasta from Bellini's because I really liked mine. Can't wait to drop by Libreria again!

Hi Honey, so great to see the Pinoy bookbloggers meeting up! That's wonderful. I've had the pleasure of meeting Tarie when she was here during the AFCC =), truly a lovely and talented lady. We didn't really have much of a chance to really talk though.

I have a copy of The Reader (way before it was shown on the big screen) - and I blogged about it - check it out if you have the time (but it's a very old post, around 2 years back, so there are less images and it's more personal/reflective rather than what we usually post now - we just reposted it when we rebuilt our site) - but this book is what made me decide to become a book blogger. It was fun watching the others stand up suddenly, when they spot a book or help themselves to another treat by Libreria. Wait, I think I was one of those people.

See you soon, Honey, I hope. The day was already awesome but it became extra-fun when you called me to play a game, :P.

@Mrs. B - It was my honor to co-host with you! I'm actually postponing Stoner a bit till after I read Woman in White. I'm only in the first few pages, but you're right--it is riveting.:)

@Peter - yes, I'm glad I'm finally reading one of your favorite novels!

@Chachic - Haha! Yes, you guys looked like you were ready to nest there. Actually, so did I. Don't worry, we'll go back there again.:)

@Myra - Yes, Tarie went there, and we were talking about next year's AFCC. I told her I wish I could go, too.:) Thanks for referring me to your review. I've read it, and I think it's great.

@artseblis - It was a joy to see you again, too, Mich. Maybe we should make that a tradition--we'll buy that book from Triccie but ask her to keep it, so that whenever we go to her store, we read a little bit from it. Then let's see how long it takes for us to end one storyline.:)

The Woman in White is a great book. I read it while I was travelling on the Trans-Siberian Express from China to England. It's amazing how he keeps up that suspense for SO MANY pages, isn't it?
So many of these books are ones that I'd like to read. I just purchased Little Stranger for my Kindle. Enjoy them all.
Sounds like a lot of fun. My experiences meeting other book bloggers in person has been similarly great.

Wow, there a quite a number of Filipino book bloggers pala! It looks fun! I believe that to complete a literary experience is to reflect upon it and discuss it heartily with others!

I'd like to join you people, when I've proven myself worthy! Hahaha!
