The Chunkster Reading Challenge

If you read my 2010 reading list, you probably noticed that there are quite a few tomes in there. So, one of the challenges it makes sense for me to join is the Chunkster Reading Challenge, hosted this year by caribousmom.

There are three levels to the challenge, and because I've always been a voracious eater, I'm signing up for the third level:

Mor-book-ly Obese - This is for the truly out of control chunkster. For this level of challenge you must commit to 6 or more chunksters OR three tomes of 750 pages or more. You know you want to.....go on and give in to your cravings.
Yep, I'm real good at giving in to my cravings.

So, culling from my original reading list, here are the books I intend to read for the Chunkster Challenge:
  1. A Suitable Boy by Vikram Seth (1474 pp.)
  2. Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy (822 pp.)
  3. Gormenghast by Mervyn Peake (511 pp.)
  4. Of Human Bondage by W. Somerset Maugham (700 pp.)
  5. The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoevsky (936 pp.)
  6. The Golden Notebook by Doris Lessing (576 pp.)
  7. Watership Down by Richard Adams (474 pp.)
The page numbers are based on the copies of the books that I have. All of them are trade paperback, except for The Brothers Karamazov, which is a really old mass-market paperback that I inherited from my grandfather, I think. None of them are large-print.

So, that's a total of 5493 pages of chunkster books that I'm committing myself to read. And I'm going to do this!

This year, I'm eyeing The Tale of Genji, Don Quixote, Les Miserables, Atlas Shrugged, The Count of Monte Cristo :D

This is a real challenge, Honey, so good luck!

This year I have just committed to one : The Crimson Petal and the White by Michel Faber. I don't know how many pages it has but my edition does look like a huge pile of pages.

@Jo - Haha! That's how I'd describe my chunksters, too. Except that I had to make sure they fulfilled the page minimum, so I had to check. Good luck with The Crimson Petal and the White!

Filipino authors with internationally-published books

A Filipina YA author was at the Brooklyn Book Festival and other festivals, some Filipino authors just wrapped up panels during the Fil-Am International Book Festival in San Francisco , a few other Fil-Am authors are coming out with new books from a major publisher in the next few months ( literary fiction , young adult , and middle grade ), and another classic author was recently published by Penguin Classics. The El Bimbo Variations by Adam David

When reading a poetry collection, one of the last things you expect to do is laugh out loud. But, if you were to read Adam David's new edition of The El Bimbo Variations , that is exactly what you'd be doing. My advice: try not to read it in public, unless you're okay with people looking at you weird because your shoulders are suddenly shaking in laughter or you have a snap-happy grin on your face. I first read The El Bimbo Variations back when it was still in pdf format. Four years ago, the poet Adam David gave a talk to one of our high school junior classes during a yearly activity where we expose students to real-life writers. In preparation, he sent us  a copy of his El Bimbo Variations , and told me that we could distribute it to the students so that they'd know his work. We photocopied them for the classes assigned to Adam and, on the day of the talk, I went in and listened to his session where he got riled up about big publishers and their limited repertoire...
