555 Review: Sookie Stackhouse 8 & 9 by Charlaine Harris

From Dead to Worse

Read: 27 June 2009

How I got it…

Why I read it…
  • check out my other Charlaine Harris marathons here and here.
  • those should explain it

What's the story?
  • something about how they coped with stuff after the big explosion
  • something about Alcide and a play for power
  • something about Bill and Eric, I think
  • Oh, and a surprise about Sookie's background

What I liked about it…
  • More Sookie and Eric
  • ...what can i say? I'm a fan.

What I didn’t like about it…
  • the fact that i can't remember the story and I had to Google it
  • the fact that, after Googling it, I still can't remember much of it.
  • it's just one of those books you have to read because you've invested in the entire series already and you can't not read one of the books in the series.

Dead and Gone

Read: 28 June 2009

How I got it…

Why I read it…
  • Bullet # 3 in "What I didn't like about it" category above

What's the story?
  • a Fairy War is brewing that will involve Sookie given her background
  • meanwhile, the weres finally go public
  • weres going public coincide with a seeming hate-crime against one of the Weres
  • there's a shift of power in the vampire community, which will impact on Eric and, of course, Sookie
  • war comes, and it's not pretty

What I liked about it…
  • Eric and Sookie, sittin' in a tree, K-I-S-S-I-N....(well, actually, they did a bit more than that)
  • the kick-ass Fairy War at the end
  • the fact that Harris actually killed off a few characters whom her readers have probably grown to love, because doing this takes courage for a writer
  • increasing politics and painful loss make for a more mature story and main character

What I didn’t like about it…
  • that some characters I had grown to love aren't there anymore
  • the hanging ending

Our literary editor in our student paper wrote a review of a book by Charlaine Harris some time ago. She found the series interesting too. Merry Christmas! :)

Hi Honey, it's my first time on your blog. You have a good one, btw. :D

I also blog about literature and books at www.penstalker.com

I wanna check out Charlaine Harris next since I'm currently hooked with Sergei Lukyanenko right now.

the plot of Harris' books seem to be forgettable though. I'll decide after i finish the series I'm following right now. :)

@Karlo - Hi! Actually, it's a cute little series which you can really intellectualize, however pretentious that might sound.:) Alan Ball did a very good job adapting it in True Blood and making it weightier.

@Mighty - Welcome! I liked Lukyanenko's Night Watch, and Day Watch is on my TBR.:) And yeah, some of the subplots in the series are forgettable, but then I find that's usually the case when you follow a long series.
