Why I read it…
  • A former co-teacher, Eric, raved to me about this series before.
  • I wanted to complete the 20-book reading challenge that I set for co-faculty members.

What's the story?
  • In this first volume of Fables, you're introduced to characters from traditional fairy tales exiled to New York; they were thrown out of their homes by the Adversary, an as-yet unrevealed entity.
  • The fairy tale characters keep track of their own, with Snow White, currently divorced from Prince Charming, acting as deputy (something like a mayor) for the bunch, and Bigby Wolf of Red Riding Hood fame giving up his grandma-eating days for the sheriff's badge.
  • The mystery begins when Jack (of Beanstalk fame) discovers his girlfriend's, Rose Red, apartment spattered in blood and Rose Red herself missing.
  • Snow White is concerned about the disappearance, especially since Rose Red is her sister; she puts Bigby on the case.
  • That's it without spoilers.:)

What I liked about it…
  • the pastiche of different fairy-tale characters and finding out what happens after their happily-ever-afters
  • the added depth to the characters who are now living in the modern world and dealing with modern issues.
  • it made me interested enough to want to read more issues.

What I didn’t like about it…

i may not want to read this, despite the pretty drawings. i don't want to think of what happens after 'happily ever after.'

what was the spammer saying? was it a spammer-stalker? wow, cool, you're a celebrity blogger now. =P

Haha! No, not a stalker. Just an ordinary annoying spammer.:)

About happily-ever-after, I'd like to believe that even if it doesn't prove true, there's still another happily-ever-after waiting in the wings.

The El Bimbo Variations by Adam David

When reading a poetry collection, one of the last things you expect to do is laugh out loud. But, if you were to read Adam David's new edition of The El Bimbo Variations , that is exactly what you'd be doing. My advice: try not to read it in public, unless you're okay with people looking at you weird because your shoulders are suddenly shaking in laughter or you have a snap-happy grin on your face. I first read The El Bimbo Variations back when it was still in pdf format. Four years ago, the poet Adam David gave a talk to one of our high school junior classes during a yearly activity where we expose students to real-life writers. In preparation, he sent us  a copy of his El Bimbo Variations , and told me that we could distribute it to the students so that they'd know his work. We photocopied them for the classes assigned to Adam and, on the day of the talk, I went in and listened to his session where he got riled up about big publishers and their limited repertoire...
