NYRB Reading Week Photo Contest

It's still the middle of our NYRB Reading Week, and Mrs. B and I have cooked up this little contest for the participants. The photo above from Thomas's blog is actually the inspiration of our NYRB Photo Contest. Why a photo contest? Well, it's a more visual and creative way to show our love for NYRBs. Plus, we do have those prizes to give away anyway.

Hence, we'll be giving away a copy of No Tomorrow by Vivant Denon as a prize to the NYRB Reading Week participant who takes the most beautiful/creative/artistic shot of his or her NYRB book or collection. A few guidelines:

  • A "participant" in the NYRB Reading Week is someone who posts a review of at least one NYRB book in his or her blog or book social networking site and leaves us a link to the review in our comments section. 
  • Only NYRB Reading Week participants can join this contest.
  • The photo doesn't have to be the one featured in your NYRB review post.
  • The photo does have to be posted within the NYRB Reading Week.
  • Entries will be accepted until the end of NYRB Reading Week (11:59PM of Nov. 13, wherever you may be).

So, how do you enter? Simply leave a link to your photo entry in the comments section of this post.

We'll be collating those photos, too, and blogging about them, so everyone can see the entries. Then, Mrs. B and I will be meeting up (for the first time ever) a day after the end of the reading week to pick the winners of the contest and to pick up the prizes donated by Fully Booked and Random House. Which means we'll be announcing the winners of the photo contest on the 16th of November.

We look forward to your photo entries and hankering after each other's books or collections.:)

I am not sure whether Mary will post hers though. Haha. =) I just borrowed three more books from the library today. We'd probly extend our NYRB reviews for another week at the rate the books are coming in. =)

Filipino authors with internationally-published books

A Filipina YA author was at the Brooklyn Book Festival and other festivals, some Filipino authors just wrapped up panels during the Fil-Am International Book Festival in San Francisco , a few other Fil-Am authors are coming out with new books from a major publisher in the next few months ( literary fiction , young adult , and middle grade ), and another classic author was recently published by Penguin Classics. The El Bimbo Variations by Adam David

When reading a poetry collection, one of the last things you expect to do is laugh out loud. But, if you were to read Adam David's new edition of The El Bimbo Variations , that is exactly what you'd be doing. My advice: try not to read it in public, unless you're okay with people looking at you weird because your shoulders are suddenly shaking in laughter or you have a snap-happy grin on your face. I first read The El Bimbo Variations back when it was still in pdf format. Four years ago, the poet Adam David gave a talk to one of our high school junior classes during a yearly activity where we expose students to real-life writers. In preparation, he sent us  a copy of his El Bimbo Variations , and told me that we could distribute it to the students so that they'd know his work. We photocopied them for the classes assigned to Adam and, on the day of the talk, I went in and listened to his session where he got riled up about big publishers and their limited repertoire...
